Joseph Hudnall family quilt
This is the Joseph Hudnall family quilt that I donated to the Athens County Historical Society on June 11, 2013.
Each of the 36 squares was hand-quilted by members of the Hudnall family, their neighbors and friends. The quilt was pieced together with scraps of family members' and friends' clothing. The quilters embroidered names on
the squares. It is unknown whether each square represented the clothing of the individual whose name was embroidered upon it.
The quilt had been stored in a cedar chest at my mother's (Millicent May Thompson Hart,
daughter of Freta Estelle Hudnall (daughter of Richard Perry Hudnall, son of Joseph) home since 1959. With it was a letter from her cousin, Mrs. Virgil Stanley, dated March 12, 1985 stating that
the quilt was over 100 years old at that time..."
